On Friday, Former UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Hughes was involved in a car accident after the truck he was in was hit by a moving train.
UFC President Dana White told ESPN that Hughes had been airlifted to a local hospital facility.
“Apparently he has head trauma,” White said. “His family is traveling to him now.”
ESPN later confirmed that the accident took place just north of Hillsboro, Illinois. Hughes was taken to a hospital facility in Springfield, Illinois.
Police also said Hughes’ truck was driven across tracks “directly in front of a train.” The collision took place on the passenger side.
MMA Imports reached out to local hospitals to get an update on Hughes conditions, but the hospitals were unable to give any information.
Hughes, 43, is one of the greatest UFC champions of all time. He is a member of the UFC Hall of Fame. He is also a two-time UFC welterweight champion and managed to defend his title on seven separate occasions during both title reigns.
