UFC 214: Lawler Returns To Championship Form, Defeats Donald Cerrone

On Saturday, the UFC hosted its most stacked card of the year with UFC 214 in Anaheim, California.

A highly anticipated welterweight battle took place on the main card when former UFC Welterweight Champion Robbie Lawler fought Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone.

Lawler swarmed Cerrone to start the fight. Lawler continued to land brutal dirty boxing. Cerrone managed to break free, but Lawler didn’t let up. Cerrone then managed to land a knee to the body. Lawler got Cerrone against the cage and continued to land shots close. Both fighters then traded knees in the clinch. After trading knees and kicks, Cerrone secured a takedown. In the final minute of the opening round, Lawler fought his way to his feet. Cerrone then landed a strong head kick to finish the round.

Cerrone threatened with kicks to start off the second round. Cerrone then unloaded with punching combinations early in the round. Lawler continued to move forward and ate Cerrone’s offense. As the round went on, Cerrone continued to land clean combinations on the former champion. Cerrone mixed up his offense with kicks and punches. In the final minute, Cerrone unloaded on Lawler, but the champion responded with some strikes of his own.

Cerrone opened the round with a combination. Lawler responded with a plethora of kicks to the head and body. Both fighters then began exchanging strikes. Cerrone went for a takedown late in the round but failed. Lawler became more aggressive in the final seconds. The fight ended with both fighters throwing until the final horn.
