UFC heavyweight Alistair Overeem says he wants a title opportunity after he defeats former UFC Heavyweight Champion Fabricio Werdum.
Overeem will fight Werdum on Saturday, July 8 at UFC 213 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
During media day for this year’s UFC International Fight Week, Overeem said his attention will be on UFC Heavyweight Champion Stipe Miocic after he defeats Werdum.
“After I beat Fabricio Werdum, I’m going to be challenging Stipe,” Overeem told MMA Fighting. “You can expect me to call him out with the mic.”
Overeem fought Miocic for his title back in September. Early in their fight, Overeem rocked the UFC champion, but Miocic recovered and ended up earning a knockout win in the first round.
Next Saturday will be the third time Overeem fights Werdum, but it will be the first time in the UFC.
In 2006, Werdum submitted Overeem at a PRIDE event in Japan. In 2011, Overeem won a decision against Werdum at a Strikeforce event.
