Robbie Lawler Admits Difficult Camp Without Matt Hughes By His Side

Former UFC Welterweight Champion Robbie Lawler says his last training camp was difficult without UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes by his side.

Last month, Hughes was involved in an accident after he was struck by a moving train while driving in a truck. The former UFC champion has been recovering in a hospital in his native Illinois ever since.

On Saturday, Lawler is scheduled to fight welterweight contender Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone.

Lawler was asked about the absence of Hughes during media day for UFC 214 on Thursday.

“Yeah, it’s been hard,” Lawler said. “He’s usually here with us right by our side, hanging out, making sure I’m alright. It is what it is. He’s doing better, but that’s something his family should talk about and let the media know through their outlets, not mine.”

Lawler has not fought in a year. Last July, Lawler lost his UFC title after getting knocked out by UFC Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley.

UFC 214 will take place July 29 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
