UFC 214 took place Saturday at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, and it featured the most stacked card of the year.
Flyweights were given an opportunity to shine on MMA’s biggest stage during the UFC Fight Pass prelims when Eric Shelton fought Jarred Brooks.
Brooks started the fight as the aggressor and landed a few kicks. Shelton patiently picked his shots and managed to land a couple of right hands. Brooks went for a takedown and got Shelton to the mat. Shelton unloaded elbows from the bottom and fought his way back to his feet. However, Brooks got the fight back down to the ground. Brooks went for a guillotine choke but Shelton escaped. Shelton again got back to his feet but Brooks continued to get the fight to the mat. Brooks went for a choke in the final seconds but ran out of time.
Both flyweights were more patient to start the middle round. The fighters exchanged punches whenever they got close together. Brooks went for a takedown, but Shelton stuffed it. Both fighters went back to choosing their strikes wisely. Shelton landed a takedown towards the end of the round. Brooks went for a guillotine choke and used it to get back to his feet. In the final seconds, Brooks landed a takedown of his own.
Both fighters traded hard punches to start the final round. Shelton controlled the cage early in the round. Shelton then dropped Brooks with an uppercut, but Brooks recovered. Brooks then went for a combination but didn’t land clean. Shelton went for a takedown late in the fight but failed. Brooks managed to get the fight to the ground in the final seconds.
