UFC 214: Woodley Stops All Of Maia’s Takedowns, Retains UFC Title

UFC 214 took place Saturday at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, and it featured the most stacked card of the year.

In the co-main event, UFC Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley defended his title against Demian Maia, who was on a seven-fight win streak in the division.

Maia went for a takedown, but Woodley stayed on his feet to start the fight. Maia continued to go for takedowns but Woodley stuffed each attempt. Woodley responded by landing punches whenever he could. Maia managed to land some punches of his own, but not with as much power as Woodley. The round ended with both fighters being hesitant to produce offense.

Woodley stumbled Maia early in the second round with a right hand. Woodley then dropped Maia with a punch and allowed Maia to get to his feet. Maia then landed a punch of his own. Woodley retaliated with a combination. Maia went for a takedown to no avail. For the remainder of the round, neither fighter produced much offense.

Maia went for another takedown to start the third round. Woodley stayed on his feet and began throwing punches. Both fighters struggled to find their targets with their punches. Maia went for a takedown but Woodley sprawled it perfectly. Maia began to have success with leg kicks. The round ended with both fighters just standing and looking at each other.

Both fighters came out a little more aggressive in round four, but neither could land significant strikes. Maia went for a takedown but Woodley walked away from it. Maia went for a takedown against the cage, but Woodley fought his way free. Woodley continued to stop Maia’s takedown attempts with ease. In the final minute, Woodley began to land some clean punches.

Maia once against started the round with a takedown attempt, but Woodley stuffed it. Maia went for another takedown to no avail. Woodley didn’t produce much damage in the first half of the round. Maia began having success with his striking. The fight ended with Maia being the aggressor, but not neither fighter threw many strikes.
