ESPN’s Sports Science has broken down how eight-ounce gloves will impact the upcoming boxing match between Floyd “Money” Mayweather and UFC Lightweight Champion Conor McGregor.
Earlier this week, the Nevada State Athletic Commission approved Mayweather and McGregor’s request to fight in smaller gloves. With their fight happening at 154 pounds, the fight was scheduled to take place in 10-ounce gloves.
Mayweather requested the smaller gloves to prevent McGregor from having excuses for when he loses the fight.
McGregor wanted the smaller gloves because they will increase his chances of ending the fight by knockout.
According to Sports Science, the force a boxer can generate with an eight-ounce glove is only two percent less than what a fighter can generate while wearing MMA gloves, which are usually four-ounces.
With the smaller boxing gloves, McGregor will be able to hit his opponent with almost the same amount of force as he does inside the Octagon.
Mayweather vs. McGregor will take place Aug. 26 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
