UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson made history last weekend when he earned his record breaking 11th consecutive title defense over Ray Borg. That being said, the flyweight champion has been criticized for not being a large pay-per-view draw. As a result, former UFC competitor Chael Sonnen has come forward with his thoughts on what he believes Johnson should do.
As seen in the video above, here is what Sonnen had to say about UFC champ Demetrious Johnson:
“The only opportunity is to come in as the bad guy and no one wants to do it.
“Demetrious said it himself and he hit the nail on the head. Prior to his last fight, he said ‘The reason this division doesn’t draw is we don’t have any drama and we don’t have any A-holes.’ He’s right, that is the problem.”
Sonnen explained what he would do if he was in Johnson’s situation.
“If I was Demetrious… I would have broken the record. I would have thanked everybody. I would have turned to Dana [White]. I would have thanked him, in a calm mild voice. And, I would retire on the spot. I would have said, ‘I know you guys don’t want to watch me fight and I’m done.
“I’ve set my records. I did what I came here to do.’ I would have waited a couple beats and I would have looked right back at Dana. I would start laughing obnoxiously and I would have said ‘Just kidding. I’m going to keep on taking your money.’ I would have held that belt up and dropped that mic and I would have walked out of there the heel. I would have done a face turn.”
