Reigning UFC lightweight champion “Notorious” Conor McGregor is still enjoying his time away from the fight game after his loss to Floyd Mayweather this past summer. McGregor boxed Mayweather for ten rounds before being stopped but despite the loss he gained a lot of respect in the process.
Following the fight the talk immediately shifted as to what’s next for McGregor. A trilogy fight with Nate Diaz seemed like the logical step given the magnitude of a rubber match between them, but there are a lot of options on the table. Even former boxing champion Pauli Malignaggi has been campaigning for a fight with the UFC lightweight champion but a return to the cage looks to be his next move.
“I think the one unique thing that Diaz has is just that unbelievable chin. I don’t think Ferguson would be able to take the shots that Diaz took.” McGregor’s coach Owen Roddy told Submission Radio.
“I think he would be asleep or the ref would have stepped in and have stopped the fight if Conor lands. Where Diaz, Conor was landing all the shots on Diaz as well and all the other stuff that we came up with worked against Diaz. It’s just he kept coming and coming and coming and coming.”
However, now that Tony Ferguson is the interim UFC lightweight champion, a title unification fight between Ferguson and Conor McGregor looks highly probable.
“I don’t think Ferguson is as durable as Diaz, so I think we’ll be well able to land the shots. You know, there’s plenty of holes in there in Ferguson’s game and I think we can capitalize and land any shots that we need to land.” said Roddy.
Speaking to Karyn Bryant, McGregor’s teammate Artem Lobov says Ferguson is the only fight that makes sense for Conor and it’s the fight he wants.
