The UFC made a trip to Las Vegas, Nev. for tonight’s highly anticipated UFC 216 pay-per-view event.
The night of mixed marital arts took place just short of a week after the tragic mass shooting that occurred late last Sunday night in Las Vegas. In memorial to the recent tragedy, the UFC offered a short video during the UFC 216 event. Unknown to him, UFC commentating veteran Joe Rogan was still mic’d up when the memorial video began broadcasting. Now a clip from the moment can be heard below.
UFC lightweight contender Tony Ferguson has been working hard towards a shot at the interim title fight. “El Cucuy” was first offered a shot at the interim title at UFC 209 in a fight against undefeated, top contender Khabib Nurmagomedov. However, the fight was pulled after “The Eagle” was rushed to the hospital for weight management issues.
In tonight’s main event, Tony Ferguson earned another shot at the interim title in an exciting battle against Kevin Lee. In the end, Ferguson earned a submission win over his opponent, granting the fighter his long desired interim belt.
Of course, there was initially speculation as to if UFC 216 would go on as planned tonight. With 59 people confirmed dead and 515 injured, the mass shooting near Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nev. that occurred last weekend has become the worst shooting in modern U.S. history.
During UFC 216, a memorial video concerning the tragedy was aired. UFC commentating veteran Joe Rogan can be heard asking if he has time to “take a leak” during the video.
