Former UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez has found himself a nice home in the world’s largest mixed martial arts promotion, but it wasn’t that long ago that fans considered Alvarez an outsider.
Back in August of 2014 it was announced that Eddie Alvarez had signed with the UFC and would be debuting against Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone. The Philadelphia based fighter had been the champion with the rival Bellator promotion for years under the leadership of former Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney.
Alvarez was coming off a win over Michael Chandler and was widely considered the top fighter outside the UFC. Getting an exit from his Bellator contract wasn’t so simple though as there had been a lengthy dispute with them prior to his win over Chandler. However, the promotion finally released Eddie from his contract allowing him to finally compete in the octagon in the summer of 2014.
A lot of the fighters complained about the way Bellator was doing business, but pretty much all of that was put squarely on the former Bellator boss, who was replaced by Scott Coker just before Alvarez signed with the UFC.
Even years later the jabs are still coming.
Check out what the former UFC lightweight champ had to say on social media.
“Great to see Bellator giving credit where credit is due , Free Bjorn Rebney bobble heads for all the fans this weekend”

Even former UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra joined in on the fun.
“Looks like Bruce Willis to me. Don’t know who Rebney is though.”
