UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway appears to be enjoying the media rounds this time around. Now the defending champion, Holloway has a big fight coming up in his near future. That in mind, the fighter still took a moment during a recent media appearance to make a light-hearted challenge to a fan.
Fight fans will be flocking to the Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan on Saturday, Dec. 2, for the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s latest fight card. The world’s most famous mixed martial arts promotion will be hosting UFC 218 this time around.
In the night’s main event, Max Holloway will be throwing down with former champion Jose Aldo in a battle for the belt that many fight fans are excited for.
Initially, Holloway was set to take on Frankie Edgar for his title defense match up at UFC 218. However, Edgar was later pulled from the headlining title fight due to an injury. Fight ready, Jose Aldo quickly stepped up on short notice for another shot at the featherweight belt.
Holloway and Aldo have fought once before. At UFC 212, the two mixed martial arts warriors went toe-to-toe for division dominance in a highly anticipated title unification match.
As the interim champion, Holloway went on to unify his title with a brutal TKO victory over “Scarface.” That being said, Holloway will have to take on the former champion once again if he wants to retain his title.
During an recent open workout event in promotion for UFC 218, Max Holloway was being lightly heckled by a fan. The fan repeatedly called the featherweight champion “Luigi.”
In response, Holloway decided to call out the heckler and then invited the fan to the stage. Holloway winded up for a punch to the fan’s body, but halted just before striking the individual. The man winced as Holloway’s fist barreled closer to his stomach.
Holloway’s interaction with the fan can be seen in the video above.
As far as why the heckler chose to call out “Luigi” to the champion, Max Holloway dressed up as the famous Nintendo character earlier this year in an odd clip in which the fighter drives around the streets to play real life “Mario Kart.”
