Fight fans were treated to a highly entertaining night of fights on Saturday, Dec. 2. The world’s most famous mixed martial arts promotion was in Detroit, Michigan during the weekend for UFC 218. The highly anticipated fight card offered a collection of epic match ups. Now fight fans appear to be having a blast recounting the night’s shocking co-main event finish.
UFC featherweight Max Holloway headlined the night’s event in an entertaining title fight rematch. The champion was initially set to throw down with former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar for the night’s event. That being said, Edgar was later pulled from the headliner due to an injury. Jose Aldo, Holloway’s most recent opponent and former featherweight title holder, stepped up on short notice for another chance to fight for the title.
Aldo and Holloway first faced off at UFC 212, with Holloway unifying his interim title with a dazzling TKO finish over “Scarface.” At UFC 218, the result was much of the same.
Holloway successfully defended his title from Aldo at UFC 218 with another third round TKO stoppage. Of course, a more stunning finish went down in the night’s co-headliner.
UFC heavyweights Alistair Overeem and Francis Ngannou went to war for the Detroit crowd in the night’s co-main event. Overeem had made his way to the No. 1 contender spot after earning a series of impressive victories over some of the division’s toughest opponents. The fighter knocked out Mark Hunt, before earning a close decision victory over Fabricio Werdum. That being said, things did not go Overeem’s way at UFC 218.
Ngannou has yet to be defeated inside the octagon. With five octagon performances on his record leading up to UFC 218, the fighter was on a nine fight winning streak as a mixed martial artist. Ngannou turned up the heat in Detroit when he knocked Alistair Overeem unconscious in the first round of their octagon battle. Now fight fans have been making memes of the epic moment all over the internet.
From Photoshop image edits to brand new GIFs, Overeem’s latest knockout loss is taking the internet by storm. Check out some of the latest takes on the epic strike in the posts below:
