Former UFC strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk suffered the end of her title reign at UFC 217. The formerly undefeated fighter faced a first round TKO loss to Rose Namajunas, making for a shocking moment in the MMA world.
Now Jedrzejczyk has come forward to offer her thoughts on the tough loss. Speaking on The MMA Hour, Jedrzejczyk revealed that she believes her weight cut played a large role on her performance.
“Man, I felt so bad. I had to cut 15 pounds in 14 hours.
“I think that Perfecting Athletes couldn’t believe that I did that. I started my weight cut at 5:00 pm on Thursday and I was on weight five minutes before 11:00 am on Friday, so it was a miracle. I was praying to God for this miracle.”
The fighter continued:
“The thing is, my legs got numb after I woke up. I said to my doctor, hey, my legs are numb and she said nothing to worry about. We’re going to hydrate you more and you’re going to be fine. But next day I felt the same.”
When asked what she believes will happen in their rematch, Jedrzejczyk stated:
“Me winning the belt. That’s it and I know it’s going to happen. Please be patient and I will put on great work and I will get this title back. Everyone will be super surprised, even Rose. My brain was not there, my brain was frozen that night and the most funny thing, my coach saw that and he changed the warm up. He knew that something was wrong.”
Jedrzejczyk then revealed that she believes UFC superstar Ronda Rousey suffered similar issues ahead of her fight against Holly Holm.
“I always wanted to talk to Ronda that night when she lost to Holly Holm but I was afraid to ask her because I was on the winning side but we actually had the same agent and I spoke to him and I told him that my legs got numb and I felt a bit groggy or something like this and Ronda felt the same way before Holly Holm.”
“The funny thing is that people don’t believe that your brain can be frozen, that the weight cut can change the game but it can and that’s the worst thing and that’s what happened to me and Ronda. We paid the price for the weight cut.”
