Yoel Romero Steps Up On Short Notice, Will Face Rockhold For UFC World Title

It would appear that the UFC’s middleweight division has seen yet another change in it’s upcoming title fight. Yoel Romero has stepped up on short notice to face off against Luke Rockhold for the division’s interim title.

Georges St-Pierre, a fighter with no experience in the middleweight division, won the title back in 2017 by choking out Michael Bisping at UFC 217. However, the French-Canadian phenom vacated the title shortly after. St-Pierre was stricken with colitis.

As a result, it was revealed that interim champion Robert Whittaker would be elevated to the undisputed title holder of the division. The newly crowned champion was set to make his first title defense against former title holder Luke Rockhold at UFC 221.

With that in mind, it would appear that fight fans will have to settle for another interim middleweight title fight.

As reported by ESPN, Robert Whittaker has pulled out of the match up due to an undisclosed injury. As a result, Luke Rockhold is now set to face off against Yoel Romero for the interim middleweight title.

UFC 221 goes down Feb. 10 inside the Perth Arena in Perth, Western Australia. The event will be featured live on pay-per-view.
