UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker was initially set to defend his title in a match up against former champion Luke Rockhold. However, the reigning title holder would later be pulled from their match up after suffering an injury.
Rockhold would go on to face off against Yoel Romero for the interim UFC middleweight title at UFC 221. Romero was not eligible for the title, as the fighter missed weight for the event.
Still, Romero earned a stunning knockout victory over Rockhold in the third round of their epic main event octagon war. Following the match up, UFC President Dana White would later reveal that Romero’s knockout victory has earned the fighter a shot at the UFC middleweight title.

The champion chose to offer the victorious Cuban fighter a message in his native language.
The statement translated: “Congratulations. A great fight Deserved triumph. Hugs”
