Multiple insiders have revealed to MMAImports.com, that a proposed interim title fight between the controversial Colby Covington, and former UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos is in discussion for the UFC’s upcoming return to Brazil.
Headlined by a female bantamweight title fight, UFC 224: Nunes vs. Pennington is set to go down on May 12, 2018, at the Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley last fought in July of 2017, in a lackluster performance over Demian Maia. The UFC’s undisputed champion would later undergo shoulder surgery, putting his return to UFC action out several months.
Now, as these things go, two of the UFC’s top welterweights may compete for an interim strap in the absence of the champion.
While not yet official, MMAImports has it on good authority that the contest is currently under negotiations.
This is inline with Covington’s recent statements that his next fight will be for the title. It is also inline with Rafael dos Anjos being promised a title shot by UFC President Dana White.
