Originally scheduled for boxing’s biggest fight of 2018, Canelo Alvarez vs. GGG II was set to go down on May 5th, as part of the festivities for the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo.
Canelo would go on to fail a pre-fight drug test during his training camp for the bout, getting popped for steroids.
Alvarez would then proclaim his innocence, blaming the positive drug test on contaminated meat from Mexico, but this still forced the cancellation of the bout.
Now, the Nevada State Athletic Commission has decided on a punishment for the fighter, and handed down a six month suspension.
ESPN broke the news:
NSAC has suspended Canelo Alvarez for six months for his positive tests of clenbuterol. Canelo admitted to it being in system, but maintains it was due to tainted beef. Here are a few pages of the settlement agreement. He’s eligible again on Aug. 17.
