Well, fight fans have once again had the rug pulled out from under them. UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson has been removed from his upcoming title fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov. Now details concerning Ferguson’s fight cancelling injury have been revealed.
Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov have been scheduled to go toe-to-toe multiple times now. However, bad weight cuts and injuries have kept the fighters from ever meeting inside the octagon.
All was seemingly going well for the two mixed martial artists leading up to their battle for the undisputed UFC lightweight title in the main event of UFC 223. Just six days before the fight, Tony Ferguson injured his knee. Now yet another Ferguson vs. Nurmagomedov match up has been cancelled.
ESPN’s Brett Okamoto has come forward over social media to report details concerning Ferguson’s injury. Taking to Twitter, Okamoto reported that “El Cucuy” simply tripped.
The fighter was seemingly surprised to see someone as he was passing by, made a sharp turn to great them and then tripped. Ferguson severely damaged his knee from the incident, potentially requiring surgery for the injury.
Now UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway is stepping up on just six days notice to move up in weight and challenge Khabib Nurmagomedov in the night’s highly anticipated main event. It has been reported that the two mixed martial artists will be battling for the undisputed UFC lightweight title, as Conor McGregor and Tony Ferguson are now set to be stripped of their titles come fight night.
UFC 223 goes down April 7 inside the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The event will be featured live on pay-per-view.
