UFC lightweight title challenger Al Iaquinta and division contender Justin Gaethje are each coming off of tough losses. With that in mind, it would appear that a match up between the two mixed martial artists may be in the works.
Iaquinta went toe-to-toe with undefeated fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov for the title back at UFC 223, ultimately suffering a unanimous decision defeat to the fighter. Meanwhile, Justin Gaethje threw down with Dustin Poirier in a fight of the year contender at UFC on FOX 29.
In the end, Gaethje suffered a TKO loss within the fourth round to his opponent. Speaking on his new podcast Call Me Al, Iaquinta stated that he is targeting a match up against Gaethje for August and that he has been in conversation with the UFC over the matter.
“We’re hoping for sometime in August. August, September. I think they wanted it to be sooner, but like, that guy needs a rest. I was looking out for his health with that one. He needs a break for a minute.”
