Eddie Alvarez Officially Accepts Poirier Rematch, Now Dustin Turns It Down

No one wanted the rematch between Eddie Alvarez and Dustin Poirier to happen more than Dustin himself. However, the #4 ranked UFC lightweight in the world recently set a deadline for Alvarez to accept the fight, threatening to move on should he not.

Alvarez claimed that he was in negotiations with the UFC on a new contract, and would not accept any fight until he and the UFC came to terms on a new deal. He subsequently let Poirier’s deadline expire.

As luck would have it, Dana White flew out and met with the former UFC lightweight champion to discuss that new deal earlier this week. Then, this afternoon Alvarez sent out a tweet, signifying that he has accepted the bout.

See you in Calgary @DustinPoirier best of luck my friend ??@ufc

So, while everything seemed good on the surface, Dustin isn’t so sure anymore, after setting that deadline for Alvarez to accept the fight, and having that deadline expire on him.

ESPN has it:

Hold the phone on Alvarez, Poirier 2 … I’m told this deadline was not for show. Dustin is not happy about how long this has taken and how it’s continued to hold up his life. As of this moment, his side is telling me there is “1,000 percent” no fight right now.

Dana White is hoping for this rematch to go down in Calgary, on the UFC president’s birthday weekend.
