Mackenzie Dern is set to face off in her sophomore octagon performance this weekend. Following the announcement that the match would be at catchweight due to Dern missing her mark on the scales, fighters have now come forward with their thoughts on the matter.
Mackenzie Dern first faced off inside the octagon against Ashley Yoder, earning a split decision victory over the fighter. While Dern has earned an undefeated record of 6-0 in her mixed martial arts career, the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu phenom has also managed to miss weight for multiple fights already.
While Dern made weight for her octagon debut, the fighter missed the mark when hitting the scaled more than once in her first five bouts. Most recently, Dern missed weight by a massive total of seven pounds.
For her second octagon performance, Dern is set to face off against Amanda Cooper at UFC 224. With the live pay-per-view event set to go down May 12, the event’s official weigh-ins were held today, May 11.
Dern weighed in at a total of 123 pounds. Cooper has since accepted a catchweight match against the fighter, with Dern being fined 30 percent of her fight purse for the match up.
Taking to Twitter, here is what many of the sport’s competitors had to say about the matter:
7lb!!! What the hell ??♀️??♀️ this isn't the first time she's missed by so much. Maybe she should be fighting at 125 if she's consistently going to miss ??♀️
I feel sorry for Amanda Cooper who was professional enough to make weight here. 7lb is fucking huge @ 115 https://t.co/zeYNv0I9MZ

So much talent and potential, but the MMA work ethic just doesn't appear to be there yet. Hard not to feel badly for Amanda Cooper, who just wrapped the training camp of her life and now may not be able to compete. https://t.co/rVyiL1ljil

Wow. Eight pounds over. As a pro fighter, you have to make weight. #UFC224 https://t.co/oNG2s5JH2X

Our sport, AC’s and promoters, need to really start to consider doing something about fighters coming overweight. A trend is building up where fighters don’t care enough & rather pay their fine, while increasing their odds to win by doing so. Unfair, unprofessional & dangerous!

Inside look at #UFC224 weigh ins. Cooper looks on as Dern comes in just a smidge over weight. pic.twitter.com/5QCY5ee7GX

All fighters should make weight. It’s part of your job. But it’s absolutely ridiculous that any percent of the fine goes to the commission and not ALL to the opponent. https://t.co/pxJKq13DWW
