The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has saved the main event for the highly anticipated fight card of UFC 225. However, there will be some changes.
UFC middleweight contender Yoel Romero was initially set to take on reigning champion Robert Whittaker in a title fight rematch for the night’s main event. However, Romero missed weight by an entire pound at the weigh-ins.
Offered a second chance to weigh-in, Romero ultimately got his weight down to 185.2 pounds. Still overweight, Romero is no longer eligible to compete for the UFC middleweight title. The news was announced by UFC President Dana White via an FS1 broadcast.
Now, instead, Yoel Romero and Robert Whittaker are set to compete in a partial title fight. While Romero will not be crowned the new champion if he wins, Whittaker still has the opportunity to gain another successful title defense by defeating his former opponent once more.
UFC 225 goes down this Saturday, June 9, inside the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. The event will be featured live on pay-per-view.
