UFC bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw has been looking to lock down a super fight against reigning UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson for some time now. While the two mixed martial artists are not set to battle it out against each other, they are both now set to compete on the same fight card.
With that in mind, T.J. Dillashaw has come forward with a few words concerning why the fight never happened.
After plans to fight “Mighty Mouse” fell through, Dillashaw locked down a title fight rematch against former champion Cody Garbrandt for the highly anticipated fight card of UFC 227. The two will be headlining the live pay-per-view event on Aug. 4 in Los Angeles, Calif.
Now Demetrious Johnson is set to defend his title against former opponent Henry Cejudo in the night’s co-main event. Speaking on the UFC Unfiltered podcast, as seen within the video above, Dillashaw recently offered his thoughts on the matter.
When asked why the fight against Demetrious Johnson never came to fruition, Dillashaw said:
“Man, I can’t really tell you. I thought it was really going to happen. We had the fight offered to us. They wanted to do it in April. Two days later, Demetrious Johnson had surgery. So, he wasn’t able to take the fight.
“I really don’t know. You’d have to ask him, because as far as I know we were able to pencil it in. But, it just didn’t really work out. Now we are fighting on the same card.”
