Fight fans poured into the Adirondack Bank Center in Utica, New York on Friday, June 1, for the latest fight card from the world’s most famous mixed martial arts promotion. With that in mind, the night’s headliner was a brief and shocking one. Now fight fans can watch it all over again.
The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was in Utica on Friday to host the highly anticipated fight card of UFC Fight Night 131. Headlining the night’s event, bantamweights Marlon Moraes and Jimmie Rivera faced off in a battle for division supremacy.
The fight did not take long. Both fighters came out of the gate a little hesitant, as they were gauging each other’s timing and reach.
However, Moraes then exploded with a head kick for the first strike of the fight. Landing cleanly on Rivera’s head, the strike sent his opponent careening to the canvas.
After Moraes pummeled Rivera with a few follow up shots, the referee had seen enough and called a stop to the contest. Moraes earned a stunning first round knockout victory over his opponent, bringing an end to Rivera’s longstanding 20 fight winning streak.
