Mixed martial arts promotion ONE Championship hosted another exciting night of fights on Friday, June 29. This time around, however, one of the night’s match ups ended in some tide turning controversy.
“ONE Championship 75: Spirit of a Warrior” took place on Friday from within the Thuwunna Indoor Stadium in Yangon, Myanmar. Featured on the night’s card, featherweights Ma Jia Wen and Sagetdao Petpayathai went toe-to-toe in a battle for division dominance.
In the end, Petpayathai earned a unanimous decision victory over his opponent in what was a terrifically close match up. As with many decision victories, the bout has since drawn some controversial fan outcry.
Responding to the controversy, ONE Championship has since offered an official statement. After reviewing the fight, the promotion has elected to overturn the fight result and declare Ma Jia Wen the winner of the match up.
Check out the promotion’s official statement below:
“The ONE Championship team led by Matt Hume and the official cageside judges have conducted an official review of the controversial bout between Ma Jie Wen and Sagetdao Petpayathai at ONE: SPIRIT OF A WARRIOR in Yangon, Myanmar.
“The bout was extremely close, with both martial artists making a case as the victor. However, after reviewing all standards of ONE Championship judging criteria, we have determined that Ma Jia Wen has slightly edged out Sagetdao on the scorecards. The decision has been formally overturned by the ONE Competition Committee and Ma Jia Wen is now declared the rightful winner.”
