Former two-division UFC champion Conor McGregor is back. The Ireland native has locked in his next big octagon performance and UFC President Dana White has now come forward with a few words on the matter.
Conor McGregor is now set to face off against UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov in the main event of UFC 229 on Saturday, Oct. 6. The event will take place from within the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. and will be featured live on pay-per-view.
Speaking to ESPN, UFC President Dana White revealed that he believes the upcoming fight is an important one for the legacy of Conor McGregor.
“I wouldn’t say that this is a crossroads fight.” White said. “This is a very important fight for both fighters. For Khabib, who’s undefeated and looked at as one of the best in the world, beating Conor is massive for him.
“Obviously for Conor, coming back from a two-year layoff, in my opinion..and it’s crazy to say this because of how popular he is around the world but he’s one of the most underrated fighters in the UFC.”
“Everybody thinks because he speaks so well and gets so crazy and everything, it makes him sort of less of a fighter. It’s the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen.
“This isn’t a crossroads fight.” White later continued. “This is another fight to cement his legacy as one of the best to ever do it.”
