UFC women’s flyweight champion Nicco Montano will not be making it to her title fight tomorrow. Now the title holder’s camp has come forward with a statement concerning the matter.
Nicco Montano was initially set to defend her title from Valentina Shevchenko in the co-main event of UFC 228. The live pay-per-view fight card is set to take place this Saturday, Sept. 8, but Montano will no longer be competing on the card.
Nicco Montano was rushed to the hospital on Friday, Sept. 7, after the UFC champion began suffering kidney issues. Consequently, Montano’s title fight co-headliner against Shevchenko has been cancelled.
Speaking to MMA Fighting, Nicco Montano’s training partner Steve Hanna offered a few words on the matter.
“She will be fine in a few days. The UFC medical team was called in to evaluate her this morning during the process of her weight cut. They determined that she had to cease cutting weight and be transported to and treated at the local hospital for issues regarding her kidney function.”
