It was unknown what would happen if Yoel Romero won tonight’s main event against Luke Rockhold.
Prior to the Cuban missing weight, the choice was simple. However, missing weight made him ineligible to compete for the middleweight interim belt in the UFC 221 main event.
Still though, his third round knockout over Luke Rockhold was enough to impress UFC president Dana White, who confirmed that the undisputed world champion Robert Whittaker will return in a rematch against Yoel Romero.
Robert Whittaker defeated Yoel Romero at UFC 213, last July. He was the first and only man to defeat Yoel inside the UFC’s Octagon.
So, despite Romero missing weight, Romero didn’t lose much, as he will still compete for the real world title in his very next bout.
ESPN spoke to Dana White to confirm the news.
Here’s the report from ESPN:
Asked Dana White if plan is to have Yoel Romero fight Robert Whittaker next, despite the fact he didn’t win an interim title tonight.
Answer: “Yes.”
