Heavyweight legends Mark Hunt and Alistair Overeem made their way into the octagon to kick off “UFC 209: Woodley vs. Thompson II” with their heavy-hitting opener. Their rivalry intensified during fight week when Hunt accused Overeem of being “juiced up”, and Overeem hoped to make him pay for those remarks.

The two touched gloves at the start of the fight showing a sign of respect, but Hunt fired off with a leg kick moments after letting Overeem know to keep his guard up. Overeem tried to keep Hunt away with a straight kick. Hunt’s shin suffered a gash on his shin due to one of the checked leg kicks.

A push kick from Overeem slowed Hunt down and made him think twice about stepping in, making it clear by constantly hopping backward whenever Overeem teased it. Overeem repeatedly attacked the body of Hunt with the push kick, but it didn’t stop Hunt from cocking his right hand and coming in close. The round ended with Overeem backed up on the fence, but fully aware and not in any danger.

Overeem landed the first major shot of the second round when he drove his knee into the gut of Hunt, pushing him up against the fence. Hunt escaped danger, tagged Overeem with a right hand and pinned him up against the fence. Hunt chose his shot which allowed Overeem to grab hold of him and clinch for recovery.

Overeem was able to pin Hunt up against the fence again, but Hunt wobbled Overeem as the round ended. Overeem quickly regained his composure and stopped the momentum of Hunt with another knee to the gut, and the round ultimately ended on the fence.

Overeem’s conditioning gave him the advantage at the start of the final round and he would ultimately knock him out COLD with a left elbow and right knee. Faceplant knockout finish for Overeem!
