UFC women’s flyweight champion Nicco Montano was initially set to defend her title this weekend. Following a series of events, the fighter has since been stripped of her title.
Montano was initially set to face off against Valentina Shevchenko in the co-main event of UFC 228 this Saturday, Sept. 8. However, the highly anticipated live pay-per-view title fight was cancelled on just a day’s notice.
Nicco Montano was hospitalized on Friday following kidney issues during her weight cut. Consequently, Montano was pulled from the upcoming match up and UFC 228’s co-main event was cancelled.
UFC President Dana White then informed UFC correspondent Megan Olivi on the recent FS1 UFC 228 weigh-in show that Nicco Montano has since been stripped of her title and that Valentina Shevchenko is now being targeted for a fight with a yet undecided opponent for the vacant title sometime later this year.
“The belt becomes vacated.” White explained. “So, the title is vacated. Obviously, Shevchenko is dying to fight for this title. So we’re in the process right now of trying to make another fight.”
