On Saturday, Valentina Shevchenko submitted Julianna Pena in the main event of a UFC on FOX event at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado. After being taken down by Pena in the second round, Shevchenko secured an armbar and finished the fight from the bottom. Following the fight, UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Amanda Nunes stepped into the cage and had a staredown with Shevchenko.
“I’m pretty sure the next fight will be title shot, and very excited to take rematch and take this belt,” Shevchenko told Nunes.
“You’re not going to do it,” Nunes responded. “We’re going to do it again and I’m going to finish you.”
In March, at UFC 196, Nunes won a decision against Shevchenko. It was this victory that earned Nunes her shot at the UFC title. Nunes won the title at UFC 200, in July, by submitting then-champion Miesha Tate.
Nunes has since defended the title once by defeating former champion Ronda Rousey in December by TKO.
Shevchenko has earned a shot at the UFC title after winning her last two fights. In July, she won a decision against former UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Holly Holm.
