John Kavanagh, the head coach of UFC Lightweight Champion Conor McGregor, says it’s easier training for boxing than it is for MMA.
McGregor is currently training to make his professional boxing debut. On Aug. 26, McGregor will fight boxing legend Floyd “Money” Mayweather.
“It’s simpler because they’re just less skills involved as there is getting ready for mixed martial arts,” Kavanagh said in a recent interview with TheMacLife. “Boxing is an element. Obviously, for boxing in MMA, we don’t go into as much detail as we do for boxing for boxing’s sake.”
Kavanagh went on to say that it is nice to focus on just one technique compared to having to train for multiple different forms of martial arts. He says McGregor will even better when he returns to MMA because he gets to spend so much time just focusing on his boxing skills.
“We are doing four times the amount of sparring for this camp than we would do for an MMA camp,” Kavanagh said. “That’s a huge amount of extra rounds.”
