Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Fabricio Werdum thinks the UFC’s drug testing policy is too strict.
Werdum believes that the drug testing done by the UFC’s official anti-doping partner, the U.S Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), is more strict than the testing done in the Olympics.
He also says he believes USADA could do better by allowing fighters to use supplements that help fighters recover, but don’t necessarily improve their performance inside the cage.
“I think that this testing is too much, too strict,” Werdum told MMA Fighting. “It didn’t have to be that much. It’s one thing to take something to recover faster… I’m not saying steroids, no. What I say is that USADA is too much sometimes.
“It’s too much. It didn’t need that much. This testing is stricter than the Olympics. I’ve never seen this before. I think it could be better. There are things that you could take that wouldn’t affect your performance, but you would recover faster. We train too hard.”
Werdum is currently scheduled to fight fellow heavyweight contender Derrick Lewis at UFC 216 on Oct. 7 in Las Vegas.
