UFC bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw has been hunting for a super-fight with UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson for some time now. Now it would appear that the fighter is getting what he wished for.
Dillashaw once again became the reigning bantamweight title holder when the fighter earned a victory over Cody Garbrandt at UFC 217. Prior to the fight, Dillashaw was targeting a super-fight with “Mighty Mouse.” However, the UFC flyweight champion turned down the fighter.
Demetrious Johnson had a big challenge ahead of him, as the fighter was one fight away from breaking the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s record for most consecutive title defenses.
Instead of facing Dillashaw, Johnson went on to fight top flyweight contender Ray Borg at UFC 216. “Mighty Mouse” put on a dominant display over the fighter, earning a dazzling submission finish over Borg. Now Johnson has broken Anderson Silva’s record with a grand total of 11 consecutive title defenses within the world’s most famous mixed martial arts promotion. Since the fight, Dillashaw has gone on to earn the bantamweight title and is more focused than ever on facing the flyweight champion.
UFC 218 went down Saturday night, Dec. 2, inside the Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan. UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway went on to defend his title with another TKO finish over Jose Aldo.
Following the event, UFC President Dana White has confirmed that T.J. Dillashaw and Demetrious Johnson will officially be throwing down. White has yet to reveal the date or venue for the super-fight, but said that an official announcement would be forthcoming.
