Browne-Lewis Referee Admits He Stopped The Fight Too Late, Explains

UFC heavyweight Derrick Lewis continued his march towards a title shot by picking up another big finish at UFC Fight Night 105 in Halifax. After a rough opening round, Lewis was able to make some adjustments and pull off a second round knockout against Travis Browne this past Sunday night.

Following the fight, a lot of fans were upset about the barrage of extra strikes that Lewis landed on Browne who was obviously in a lot of trouble. Referee Mario Yamasaki allowed the fight to continue a bit longer than most were comfortable with, but admits he made a mistake and should’ve waved it off sooner.

Yamasaki explained his stoppage in the main event to MMAfighting.com earlier.

“Right in the moment, I already knew that I allowed two extra punches, but the reaction time from a heavyweight is different than a lighter fighter. So when (Derrick Lewis) landed the punch where (Travis Browne) went out, he was able to land two more before I came in to stop the fight. But for sure, I should have stopped it a little earlier. Everyone has his days, and I can’t give excuses.”
