Sixth-ranked Ovince Saint Preux stepped into the octagon at “UFC Fight Night 104” on Saturday evening as the heavy favorite opposite of Volkan Oezdemir who was simply hoping to score a major upset win and crack the top fifteen of the rankings.
Oezdemir fired off a headkick right off the bat, but OSP blocked it with ease. Still, Oezdemir charged forward with aggression and caught OSP off guard multiple times with punches that came from bizarre angles. OSP spent the majority of the opening round with his back against the fence looking for an escape route from Oezdemir’s crazy striking. It took OSP the majority of the round to make it back to the center of the octagon, but it wasn’t long before Oezdemir pinned him back up against the fence to land some stiff shots.
In between rounds, OSP was told to be a bit more aggressive and simply touch Oezdemir to slow him down and make him think twice. It didn’t take long for OSP to drop down and shoot for a takedown, which was secured and finished but Oezdemir got back to his feet with ease.
Oezdemir’s pace slowed down drastically in the second round which allowed OSP to pick up the activity and get some offense of his own. The crowd voiced their disproval of the lack of action in the second half of the fight until OSP started to string together some combinations. Still, most of OSP’s strikes were blocked and Oezdemir did not counter with anything other than exhaustion.
