It does not matter whether it is mixed martial arts, kickboxing, or boxing. Every single time an athlete steps onto the stage under the bright lights to fight another athlete for money, they are putting their lives on the line and entertaining the masses in the process. Referees, doctors, and cornermen are all there to make sure the fight goes off without any issues and that each fighter remains safe and does not take too much punishment.
Unfortunately, even under the best conditions tragedy can strike.
This case, seventeen-year-old boxer Ed Bilbey passed away inside the boxing ring just moments after getting his hand raised in victory, Daily Mail UK reports. The young boxer had just finished fighting his friend for the East Midlands Youth Welterweight Championship, going the distance in a three-minute, three round fight. He had stumbled forward and passed out and brought to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Due to the fact that there is no known footage of the fight, police officers are asking fans to share any footage of the fight with them:
‘If you were at the tournament and have any footage of the bout or information that might help, please contact Detective Sergeant Debbie Yoxall on 101, quoting incident number 1162 of March 24.’
