Khabib Nurmagomedov has been the topic of conversation in the mixed martial arts community since he was forced out of his championship bout with Tony Ferguson the day before “UFC 209”. The undefeated Russian fighter made his way to a local hospital on the eve of weigh-ins rather than contacting UFC doctors, and that was a decision that likely cost him his shot at the title the following Saturday.
Nurmagomedov made his way to the hospital due to health issues stemming from his difficult weight cut, a weight cut that Ferguson wished him luck on when the two stared down just hours prior. Apparently, this wasn’t the first time Nurmagomedov has had issues making 155 pounds before. Nurmagomedov has missed weight in the octagon before, but suffering due to the cut is not a new thing for the fighter. Luke Rockhold recently sat down with Submission Radio and made the following comments on Nurmagomedov’s rough cut:
“The weight cut wasn’t going very well. Khabib was complaining about a pain in the side and we had to cut short the weight cut, and sure enough, I guess it got worse overnight and he had to go the hospital. Unfortunate. That was the fight I was really looking forward to for Khabib and it’s been a long time working with that man and I know he’s put in the time and the effort and deserved it, so it just sucks.”
“From what I understand he wasn’t getting any blood to his liver and something went wrong with the weight cut. It was very similar to his last fight from what I understand and just something went wrong. You never know with these weight cuts I guess. But I think he’s ready to go and we can rebook that thing.”
