UFC President Dana White has confirmed former UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre will fight for the UFC 170-pound title in his next fight.
At UFC 214, on July 29, UFC Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley will defend his title against top contender Demian Maia. The winner of the fight will go on to fight St-Pierre.
“Georges and I talked a couple days ago when he was in Vegas. Georges is saying he wants to fight. We’ll get this thing figured out. We’re talking about Tyron Woodley and Demian Maia. These two are going to fight soon. That will free up the 170-pound champion for Georges St-Pierre to return and try to regain his belt,” White told MMAjunkie.
St-Pierre was previously set to make his return to the UFC against UFC Middleweight Champion Michael Bisping. However, the fight was canceled due to St-Pierre not being able to fight until the end of the year.
St-Pierre’s long-awaited UFC return is rumored to take place in November at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
UFC rushed to do Woodley-Maia in July so they could have winner fight GSP at MSG. 214 is amazing, but I feel for Maia: deserved more time.
