Francis Ngannou is a rising star in the heavyweight world of mixed martial arts. After a huge victory over the weekend, the fighter is now set to face off for the UFC heavyweight title. Now it would appear that the fighter is a crowd favorite for the match up.
Fight fans flooded into the Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan on Saturday, Dec. 2, for the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s most recent event. This time around, the world’s most famous mixed martial arts promotion hosted UFC 218. The highly anticipated fight card included a bevy of entertaining match ups, few of the night’s octagon wars had the crowd screaming like the co-main event.
There was a heavyweight battle in the night’s co-headliner, as Alistair Overeem went toe-to-toe with Francis Ngannou. Overeem is the No. 1 contender in the division. The fighter earned a dazzling knockout over Mark Hunt, before taking on former UFC heavyweight title holder Fabricio Werdum. Against Werdum, Overeem edged out a close decision victory. That in mind, things did not go the former K-1 Grand Prix champion’s way at UFC 218.
Francis Ngannou was on a nine fight winning streak heading into the octagon for UFC 218. Five of the fighter’s wins came under the UFC banner, as Ngannou has yet to be defeated inside the octagon. In front of the Detroit crowd on Saturday, Ngannou made sure to keep his winning streak alive and healthy.
The fighter earned a vicious first round knockout victory over Overeem, leaving the former K-1 Grand Prix champion unconscious on the canvas. Since the fight, UFC President Dana White has since revealed that Ngannou has officially earned a title shot against UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic.
Now betting odds for the fight have been revealed. As reported by MMA Odds Breaker, Ngannou has opened as a (-160) betting favorite over Miocic. Miocic is coming in at a (+130).
