After a lengthy stint in the Bellator booth, veteran ringside announcer Jimmy Smith is no longer calling the action of Bellator events. Bellator MMA released a statement today, announcing the shift in production.
This news comes after Bellator MMA inked a deal with veteran voice of the UFC’s Mike Goldberg, who also plays commentary role next to fellow veteran Mauro Renallo.
The two could very well be the most experienced and best ringside team in the business today, and as such, Jimmy was likely deemed expendable.
It was also revealed today that Chael Sonnen will play an active role in ringside duties in the coming year, as well.
The Bellator press release reads,
After a long and successful relationship, Jimmy Smith and Bellator have mutually agreed to part ways.
Jimmy is one of the finest combat sports announcers of our time. He has played an integral role in the growth of Bellator as it has evolved into the successful global franchise it is today.
The Paramount Network sports production team and Bellator MMA would like to thank Jimmy for his great work behind the mic over the years and wish him all the best in the future.
Details on Bellator’s 2018 on-air team will be announced shortly.
Including in the Bellator document was a statment from Smith as well.
“I am very grateful to the entire Bellator organization and fans for an amazing and unforgettable nine years. As I move on to the next phase in my career, I want to wish all of the fighters, producers, and Bellator staff the absolute best.” – Jimmy Smith
