UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic is on a dominant run through the world’s most famous mixed martial arts promotion at the moment. On a five fight winning streak, with each victory coming by a finish, the reigning title holder has taken out some of the division’s best competitors. Most recently, Miocic avenged his loss to former champion Junior dos Santos with a first round TKO at UFC 211. With that in mind, it would appear that the champion was perhaps not too impressed with Francis Ngannou’s stunning performance at Saturday’s UFC 218.
UFC 218 went down Saturday night, Dec. 2, inside the Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan. In the night’s main event, UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway successfully defended his title from former title holder Jose Aldo in a highly anticipated title fight rematch. Holloway earned his second consecutive third round TKO victory over “Scarface” in front of the Detroit crowd. That in mind, the night’s stunning co-headliner still has many fight fans talking.
UFC 218’s co-main event featured a heavyweight war. Alistair Overeem has climbed his way up to the No. 1 contender position of the division with wins over some of the best. Going into UFC 218, the fighter was on a two fight winning streak.
After earning a savage knockout victory over Mark Hunt, Overeem went on to face former champion Fabricio Werdum at UFC 213 . The two MMA warriors battled it out, with the fight ultimately going the distance. Overeem walked away with a close decision win over the former champion. That in mind, things did not go Overeem’s way in Detroit.
Rising MMA star Francis Ngannou has yet to be defeated inside the octagon. With five octagon performances on his record going into UFC 218, the fighter was on a dazzling nine fight winning streak as he stepped inside the octagon on Saturday night. Well, Ngannou has kept the winning streak alive.
Ngannou earned a devastating knockout finish over the former K-1 Grand Prix champion in the first round, leaving Alistair Overeem stunned on the canvas. Now fighters and fight fans alike are offering their thoughts on the exciting finish over social media. While UFC President Dana White has revealed that Ngannou will now be receiving a title shot against Stipe Miocic, the reigning champion does not appear terribly amused.
Taking to Twitter, Miocic offered a picture of himself laughing and included the short statement “And still…”
