Two Fighters Just Got Popped, One In The UFC, And Bellator’s First Of 2017

It would appear that the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), as well as competing mixed martial arts promotion Bellator MMA, have each suffered a recent drug test failure from top competitors.

USADA

The UFC announced on Friday that flyweight Carls John de Tomas failed a USADA drug test related to his recent match up at UFC Fight Night 123. The fighter failed his in-competition test following the weigh-ins for the event, in which de Tomas would go on to lose to Alex Perez by submission. As a result, Carls John de Tomas is no longer under UFC contract.

With that in mind, the world’s most famous mixed martial arts promotion is not the only organization in which a fighter has suffered a failed drug test as of late.

Bellator

Bellator heavyweight James Thompson is a veteran in the sport of mixed martial arts. The fighter has found himself on a tough three fight losing streak after being submitted by Philip De Fries at Bellator 191. However, it has now been reported that the MMA veteran has failed his drug test for the recent event.

As first reported by The MMA Report, Thomspon has failed his Bellator 191 in-competition test drug test for the steroid drostanolone. Banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), drostanolone is an anabolic-androgenic steroid.

The fighter will now face a one-year suspension that is retroactive to Dec. 15. Thompson has also been fined $2,000 and will have to provide a clean drug test before being relicensed for competition.

James Thompson has not earned a victory under the Bellator MMA banner since 2014. The fighter earned a first round stoppage victory over Eric Prindle, before going on a rough three fight losing streak. The MMA veteran’s three recent losses have all come by a finish.
