The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) put on another stunning night of fights on Saturday, Dec. 2. This time around, fight fans funneled into the Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan for UFC 218. With the entertaining evening of match ups having now come to a close, the time has come to see what fighter from the world’s most famous mixed martial arts promotion had to say about the night’s epic co-main event finish.
In the nigh’s headliner, UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway earned a chance to defend his title. For the match up, the Hawaiian based fighter went toe-to-toe with Jose Aldo for a highly anticipated match up.
Holloway and the former champion first faced off at UFC 212. Aldo was the reigning champion and Holloway was looking to unify his interim title in a battle against the dominant featherweight fighter. In the end, Holloway managed to put his opponent away for a TKO victory.
Moving forward to UFC 218, Holloway was initially set to defend his title from Frankie Edgar. However, Edgar was pulled from the headliner event due to an injury. As a result, Jose Aldo stepped up on short notice to accept another chance to fight for the title. That being said, many fight fans are still talking about the intense co-main event match up from Saturday’s fight card.
In the night’s co-main event, No. 1 ranking UFC heavyweight contender Alistair Overeem faced off against rising star Francis Ngannou for division dominance.
Overeem was on a two fight winning streak coming into the match up, having most recently earned a close decision victory over former champion Fabricio Werdum. Ngannou, on the other hand, had yet to be defeated inside the octagon. All in all, the fighter was riding a nine fight winning streak in his mixed martial arts career.
Facing off against Overeem, Ngannou earned a brutal knockout victory over the No. 1 ranking heavyweight contender that put the Detroit crowd on their feet.
With the stunning co-main event finish now in the books, it’s time to check out what many of the UFC’s top competitors had to say on the matter.
