The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) hosted a horde of exciting match ups on Saturday night, Dec. 2. The world’s most famous mixed martial arts promotion was in Detroit, Michigan this time around for UFC 218. From inside the Little Caesars Arena, the highly anticipated fight card saw bloody war after bloody war go down inside the octagon. Two of the night’s competitors put on a definite fight of the year candidate during the event and now the two MMA warriors appear to be good friends from inside the hospital.
Headlining the show, UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway was given a chance to defend his belt. The Hawaiian based competitor was initially set to face off against Frankie Edgar in the night’s main event. Edgar was, however, pulled from the night’s card after suffering an injury. As a result, a former opponent of Holloway’s stepped up on short notice to make another shot for the featherweight title.
Holloway unified his interim title with a vicious TKO victory over Jose Aldo at UFC 212. After realizing that Edgar was out of UFC 218, “Scarface” stepped up on short notice for another chance to fight for the belt. This time around, Holloway put on a dominant performance and earned his second consecutive third round TKO victory over the former champion. That being said, the night’s main event is not the fight that many fans are calling a possible fight of the year candidate.
Welterweights Alex Oliveira and Yancy Medeiros stepped inside the octagon to put on a show for the Detroit crowd. Well, they certainly delivered.
Medeiros and Oliveira went back and forth for nearly three rounds, with each fighter landing bombs on their opponent that seemed to bring the fight moments away from being stopped. However, the MMA warriors simply pushed through the pain and kept up a bloody brawl that has left both fighters in need of medical attention. In the end, Yancy Medeiros earned a TKO victory over “Cowboy” Oliveira in the final round.
The two fighters can be seen embracing each other in friendship in the Instagram post provided below, as the two MMA phenoms met at the hospital after their epic brawl.
