Undefeated boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. momentarily came out in 2017 to face off against UFC superstar Conor McGregor inside the squared circle. The fighter earned a TKO victory in one of the year’s most highly anticipated sporting events before slipping back into retirement with a perfect record of 50-0. Still, fight fans can’t help but wonder what it would be like if the pugilist legend stepped inside the octagon. Now longtime announcer Bruce Buffer has come forward to give his thoughts on the matter. For Buffer, Phil Brooks would be the perfect opponent for the undefeated boxer.
Phil Brooks, better known by his WWE moniker CM Punk, made his MMA debut inside the octagon. However, things did not go well for the pro-wrestler turned fighter. Facing Mickey Gall, Brooks suffered a quick and devastating loss to his opponent. CM Punk has been back in training ever since. However, Buffer believes that Brooks should face off against Mayweather for the retired boxer’s octagon debut.
As heard in the podcast clip below, Bruce Buffer offered his thoughts on the matter.
After hearing his partner suggest Floyd Mayweather Jr. go toe-to-toe with Phil Brooks, Buffer quickly responded “It’s funny you say that, because I am thinking the exact same thing too.”
After discussing the possibility of the UFC letting Brooks back inside the octagon, Buffer reaffirmed that he is totally behind the potential match up. “It’s all good stuff. I don’t have a problem with any of this stuff getting made.” The announcer then explained his reasoning by stating, “The UFC started on the fact of styles fighting styles, who has the best style?”
Speaking on Mayweather’s enticing match up against McGregor, Buffer added:
“The whole boxing thing, it just opened up a whole other avenue. It actually made boxing even more relevant. I think a lot of people that are MMA fans are starting to pay attention to it and now the UFC is thinking about starting to do boxing fights.”
