Former UFC middleweight world champion Luke Rockhold was forced to make an annoying decision last night after Yoel Romero failed to make championship weight.
With all the power, Luke, who made weight, could either back out of the fight entirely, and leave UFC 221 absent a main event, or he could agree to fight an overweight opponent, in Cuba’s Yoel Romero.
Luckily for fight fans, Rockhold opted to fight the Olympic silver medalist at the final hour, and the fight will go on as planned… Mostly.
For missing weight, Yoel is no longer eligible to fight for a world title. Instead, only Luke will be belted with a win.
Overnight, there were talks that Rockhold would not accept the bout, but in the end, he and the UFC were able to come to new terms to make tonight’s main event happen.
