UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker has been locked in for a spot in the upcoming Commonwealth Games.
As reported by news.com.au, the UFC title holder will be competing for Australia in the upcoming Gold Coast Games. The event will begin April 4 and Whittaker is set to compete in the 97kg division.
Whittaker was initially set to defend his title from former champion Luke Rockhold at the recent UFC 221 event. However, Whittaker was forced to pull out of the match up due to an injury.
As a result, Rockhold faced off against Yoel Romero for the event. Romero earned a stunning knockout victory over his opponent, earning the fighter a shot at the middleweight title.
Romero and Whittaker first faced off back at UFC 213. The two mixed martial arts warriors went toe-to-toe for the interim UFC middleweight title, with Whittaker ultimately earning a unanimous decision victory over his opponent.
