Fight fans poured inside the Perth Arena in Perth, Western Australia on Saturday night, Feb. 10, for UFC 221. The night’s main event saw UFC middleweight warriors Yoel Romero and Luke Rockhold battle it out for division dominance.
Romero missed weight for the event, making him ineligible for the interim middleweight title. With that in mind, the fighter still walked away with a knockout victory over the former champion in the third round.
Ultimately, Romero still faced a hefty pay cut for his missed weight. Luke Rockhold was granted 30 percent of Romero’s fight purse for the match up, which has been estimated to be upwards of a staggering $105,000.00.
Beyond that, Romero was not eligible for his tier of UFC Athlete Outfitting Payouts for the match up due to his missed weight cut.
As part of the UFC’s uniform deal with Reebok, the sport’s apparel company compensates UFC competitors for their octagon performances. The total compensations is dependent on the number of fights each competitor has achieved inside the octagon, under the Zuffa-era of the WEC and under the Zuffa-era of Strikeforce.
Those competing for a title are also granted an increased total in compensation, as Rockhold was granted $30,000 for his match up. However, Romero was not eligible for the title and was therefore unable to bank the same athlete outfitting payout.
